Quick History: Several years ago my mom and I somehow struck up a conversation about making a "memory quilt" using the many t-shirts I've collected over the years from bands I know and love. Not commercial bands, but rather the bands of my friends. The ones I went to see all the time in college and subsequent years...and even some to this day.
At the time I had a closet full of t-shirts that I never wore anymore, but just couldn't throw out. I went to cutting out squares around the logos and whatever else. Some of the shirts loosely fit into the mix because they were either designed by a friend, made by a friend or even designed/made by me! Yes, even I have screen-printed some rock and other shirts. Fond memories are essentially the key, along with friendship and the admiration and support of creative projects among friends. The spirit of much of my young-adult life.
My mom has diligently collected and prepped these squares, often nursing the heavily-worn fabric back to health with careful trimming and backing them with reinforcement. For those of you who don't know, I just got engaged to my love Mike, who's mom is a QUILT MASTER! She has now joined the ranks of the awesome "Rock Quilt Team" -- and helped my mom place the squares in a "pleasing" layout! Oh joy!!!
I know this because they called me today to find out which band Gil Garcia was in...because Gil Garcia is who introduced me to Mike about five + years ago. Gil and I met via Johnny Briggs many years ago, and one fateful "Nerd Convention" in 2003 brought us together. But I digress (that's what I do, afterall)...Mike's and my moms wanted to make sure the Los Terribles quilt square will hold a prominent position on the Rock Quilt.
There is much to be done to complete the quilt, and I will keep ye faithful readers posted...but here is a snapshot of the squares as organized today. Note that there are so many squares that didn't make it in the KING SIZE layout, that there will likely be a throw-quilt for one of our couches as well! Plus, for future "squares" we can make pillow shams and throw pillows! GLORIOUS!!
So please enjoy the snapshot and pass the word to your rock bretheren if you see them represented on the quilt. There is a possibility of a "gallery" show including and inspired by this quilt on a future date. So Russ and Wendzel...your archived flyers will not go to waste!
Oh, and yes, I was in a band too...Colorado Honor Band. Wild tours of small parades all over the southwest! Many thanks to all on the quilt and to Bev and my Mom for the great work!!
